German Film Festival 2017 | Fitzcarraldo

Brian Sweeney “Fitzcarraldo” Fitzgerald (famously played by Klaus Kinski) is a monomaniacal dreamer with a bold dream of creating his own opera in the jungle. The nouveau riche millionaires in the Amazon region show an arrogant lack of understanding for his passion for music, so for a long time he has sought in vain for someone to finance his project, receiving support only from Molly, the owner of a high-class brothel. To help finance his dream, Fitzcarraldo takes a steamship up a tributary of the Amazon, in an attempt to reach an inaccessible rubber region.

Nominated for a slew of prizes – including the Palme d’Or award of the Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film – Fitzcarraldo won the award for Best Director at Cannes for its director, Werner Herzog. The film is also notable for the many difficulties that plagued its production – from casting changes and reshoots, to injuries suffered by crew members.
